Top Ten Tuesdays: My Summer TBR Pile

Cheers to the gals at The Broke and the Bookish for hosting this lovely meme!

This is meant to be the Top Ten Books on my Summer TBR pile. However, I’ve listed the nine books (or possibly 13, if you count all the titles by Hobb that I intend to read!) that are definitely next up in my TBR list, although I’m sure I’ll pick up some random others based on reviews I see floating around. I've got a one month holiday coming up in August too, so I'm hoping to get through quite a few!

Assassin's Quest (Farseer Trilogy #3) by Robin Hobb
This is the last book in an epic trilogy that I have loved so far. I binge-read the first two books, and have definite plans to finish off the third soon (and probably the Tawny Man trilogy too, because why not). Based on the first two, I have no doubt that they will be awesome. Just look at that dragon on the cover!

Lagoon by Nnedi Okorafor
I’ve only ever read one short story by Nnedi Okorafor. (It was marvellous.) Plus, her books seem to keep extremely good company on Goodreads – whenever they pop up, they’re always listed with others I love. So looking forward to her novel on the alien invasion of Nigeria!

Lord of Emperors (The Sarantine Mosaic #2) by Guy Gavriel Kay
I started reading Kay a couple of years ago, and have loved everything he’s written. Now this book was actually on my Spring TBR list, but somehow I didn’t get around to it (I blame Netgalley!). But I love Kay’s novels. They’re dramatic, and epic, and always make me cry. Definitely reading this over summer.

Shadowplay (Micah Grey #2) by Laura Lam
I read Book 1 earlier this year, and now Book 2 is sitting on my Kindle, waiting patiently to be read. A second instalment of queer fantasy, apparently with more magic than the last? Yes please.

The Mirror Empire (The Worldbreaker Saga #1) by Kameron Hurley
I’ve heard a lot of good things about Hurley’s other books, although I’ve never read them. This new series of hers seems like a good place to start! It looks suitably epic.

I know there are a lot of people who dislike these books, but I’m not one of them. (Maybe this could be blamed on my love of Narnia, despite its many flaws?) Anyway, I can’t wait to see how Grossman wraps this trilogy up.

Rose Under Fire (Code Name Verity #2) by Elizabeth Wein
Another WW2 pilot novel, this time about an American who gets captured and sent to Ravensbruck, the notorious women's concentration camp. Looks as heart-wrenching as the last, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Also, that cover! Arty & dramatic.

Earth Star (Earth Girl #2) by Janet Edwards
I don’t read much YA, but am happy to make an exception for this series. The first book was awesome, and I’ve heard the second lives up to its predecessor. Yes to clever sci-fi & awesome female protagonists.

War for the Oaks by Emma Bull
This book has been sitting on my Kindle for at least a year, and I found it when I was reorganising my books. I know it’s a classic (with faeries! I have a terrible weakness for faeries) so am really looking forward to reading it.

  2. Picked out a couple from your list - Lagoon and The Mirror Empire, probably just for the covers, but I am trying to branch out a bit.
    Enjoy the summer reading!

    1. The cover of Lagoon is awesome, right? I want it as an art print.

  3. I have had to fight to keep myself from reading Mirror Empire too early. I have high, high hopes.

I read War for the Oaks a few years back. I enjoyed it, though I enjoyed her book Territory a lot more. But territory is very tied to US historical mythology (showdown at the OK coral), while War for the Oaks is a bit more universal.

    1. I haven't even heard of Territory! Just looked it up, along with the gunfight at the OK Coral. Interesting that it became so famous.

  4. Yay for Rose Under Fire! I have yet to read that too! And also, I just checked out Lagoon, and sci-fi in Nigeria? I think that's one of the most original blurbs I've come across. Anyways, have fun reading all of these, and thanks for stopping by my blog!

    1. I think I need to save Rose Under Fire for a weekend when I can sob my heart out after reading. That last book of hers caused me so much pain! I hope you enjoy it too though...

  5. Wow, there are some really interesting books on your list. I'm always a bit reluctant to start series, so for now I'll add Lagoon and War for the Oaks to my wishlist - even I have a weakness for faeries, I looked up War for the Oaks and it sounds delightful already!

    1. Yeah, there's a sad lack of standalones on this list! But yay for faeries at least :D

  6. Yessss so many excellent books! I love Hobb, as you know. And I absolutely ADORE GGK. He is top of my "I will read seriously anything you write" list of authors. I've never been disappointed (except, oddly, for Fionavar, which I didn't love). And of course Mirror Empire.

I'll need to check out the Laura Lam for sure -- that sounds so interesting!

    1. You should! Pantomime is the first book in the series. I think you'd like it.

Seriously can't believe it took me so long to read anything by Hobb. At least I can savour her books now though :D

  7. I'd like to check out Lagoon - but I think that one still has yet to get a US release date. Shadowplay was actually on my SPRING reading list...since I still haven't gotten to it, guess it is on my summer list now :P

    1. Goodreads says Lagoon was published April 2014, and it looks like it's currently available on Amazon.com. Maybe they sneaked the pub date in extra fast...?

  8. I didn't realize Grossman was already on his third Magicians book. I loved the first book!

  9. Oh Robin Hobb! I keep hearing amazing things and I know she already has like a hundred books out, I cannot wait to start her novels. As soon as I clean up some of the ARCs, I will read her. :D

    Happy reading!

  10. I love your list! So many titles I haven't heard of but that sound amazing :) Pantomime is pretty high up on my list and I will no doubt pick it up soon (even if it's not on my top five for the summer) so I love seeing Shadowplay on yours. Gotta check out the Earth Girl series!

    Happy summer reading :)

    1. Yeah I originally only had 8 books on my list, and then saw Rose Under Fire on yours and realised I had to read that too! Because Code Name Verity was just that awesome :)

Be interested to see what you make of Hobb, though I think you'd like her stuff.

  13. Lagoon has such a beautiful cover. And I love the title of Assasin's Quest. There are some eye-catchingly beautiful books on this list. I've heard good things about Code Name Verity, so maybe I need to find the books and read it. And find me some tissues from what I've heard.

  16. I just purchased a Kindle copy of the first in the Farseer Trilogy! It sounds fantastic and I've been really into fantasy lately so I'm hoping I love it. I've heard some fabulous things about Guy Gavriel Kay but have yet to pick up anything of his. Will have to check that one out! War for the Oaks was recommended to me and I love the sound of it. Happy Reading!

    1. Guy Gavriel Kay is AMAZING if you like epic/historical fantasy. I think my favourites by him so far are Tigana and The Lions of Al-Rassan. But pretty much all his writing seems fantastic.

Hope you enjoy Assassin's Apprentice! :D
